The Washington and Lee School of Law Black Law Students Association (BLSA) moot court and mock trial teams have advanced to nationals following top finishes at the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association (MABLSA) competitions, held during the regional convention in Philadelphia Feb 5-9.

In the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court competition, the W&L Law team of Noriya Shahadat ‘21L and Junior Ndlovu ‘20L took first place overall, and the team of Jessiah Hulle ‘20L and Tomi Akinmola ‘21L took second. In addition, Shahadat was named best oral advocate for the competition.

W&L Law BLSA also fielded two teams for the Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial competition. The team of Kasia Wiggins ‘20L, George Bouchard ‘21L, Sabrina Matlock ‘22L, and Chris Watts ‘22L won third place and will advance to the national competition. The other mock trial team, comprised of Sarah Vanderhoff ’22L, Russel Wade ‘22L, Raven Burks ‘22L, and Kenneth Snavely ‘22L, had a strong showing and advanced as quarter finalists in the regional round.

The W&L Law teams will head to Cincinnati in March for the national competition, which occurs during the annual conference of the National Black Law Students Association. In addition to hosting the competitions, the regional and national conferences serve as an opportunity for students to network with other students as well as practitioners and potential employers.
