Campus Kitchen by the Numbers

As the new academic year begins, The Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee tallied up its work from the last, and the numbers are impressive.

The students served 19,471 hot buffet meals and cold individual meals. The most popular meal? Meatloaf.

VMI and Wal-Mart joined other organizations in donating 59,934 pounds of food, of which 20,278 were donated to food pantries.

Student volunteers donated 5,278 hours of their time — an increase of 1,500 over a year ago. And, of course, CKWL served its 50,000th meal in March.

Aside from the numbers, CKWL began a partnership with the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic last year and introduced its Weekend Backpack Snack Program with county schools, which is set to expand this year.

So what’s new for this year? Look for the students to begin teaching “Healthy Cooking on a Budget” classes with partnership agencies.
