Jim Casey, associate professor of economics at Washington and Lee University, gave a statement at a public hearing that took place at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Mon., Mar. 18.

The public hearing was held on the proposed revised cost findings of the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) and results of the Residual Risk and Technology Review.

Casey spoke at the hearing as a member of the Science Network of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Each commenter had five minutes to provide oral testimony.

“We need to make sure that Cost-Benefit Analysis remains theoretically sound, objective, science-driven, and non-partisan and that is what compels me to be here today,” said Casey.

A copy of the proposed rule is available on the EPA’s website and the comment period is still open. Comments must be received on or before April 19, 2019 by online submission, email, mail, fax, or courier delivery.
