Glynn Family Scholar to Give Public Lecture on Intergroup Contact
Thomas F. Pettigrew, Glynn Family Scholar at Washington and Lee University and research professor of social psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will give a lecture on Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the Elrod Commons Stackhouse Theater. The lecture is titled “Intergroup Contact: How to Facilitate Intergroup Harmony?”
The event is free and open to the public.
Pettigrew has specialized in intergroup relations throughout his career and conducted intergroup research in Australia, Europe and South Africa, in addition to North America. In 2001, he was a senior fellow at the Research Institute for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity at Stanford University. He has also taught at the Universities of North Carolina, Harvard and Amsterdam.
He has served as president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and received the Society’s Gordon Allport Intergroup Research and Kurt Lewin awards. The American Sociological Association gave him the Sydney Spivack Award for Race Relations Research. In 2002, the Society for Experimental Social Psychology presented him with its Distinguished Scientist Award.
Pettigrew received his B.A. in psychology from the University of Virginia and his M.A. and Ph.D., both in social psychology, from Harvard.
The John and Barbara Glynn Family Professorship (Glynn Family Scholar) was established in 2001 to fund annually a visiting professor who is an accomplished scholar and teacher, preferably one who brings new expertise to cover under-represented areas of importance within the curriculum. The endowment is the gift of John W. Glynn Jr. and Barbara A. Glynn in honor their daughter, Alexandra Glynn Rowe ’92, and other family.
