Jessica Hopper ’08: ABC News Digital Journalist

Presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz will be covered from all angles this campaign cycle by two Washington and Lee University alumnae. He’s got Rachael Slobodien (’06) (blogged about here) leading his communications staff, and Jessica Hopper (W&L ’08) covering his campaign as a digital journalist with ABC News.

Jessica majored in journalism at W&L and continued her studies at Columbia University’s school of journalism. She has worked in New York City as a digital reporter and producer at ABC and an associate producer at NBC, including stints with “Rock Center with Brian Williams” and “Dateline.”

She said, “I’m excited to be a part of the ABC News team covering the 2016 presidential race. Since my time as a student journalist at W&L covering election night for ‘The Rockbridge Report,’ I’ve dreamed of covering a presidential election. As a journalist, it’s an honor to be on the campaign trail to cover the political process up close, and I look at it as a great responsibility, too.”

James Goldston, president of ABC News, said in a press release, “Along with the entire ABC News politics team, our campaign DJs will take us inside the campaign like never before, transforming our storytelling with more immediate reactions and live coverage. They will bring the drama, excitement and key moments of the campaign to our audiences — putting them on the front lines of the campaign trail 24/7, with live GoStreams on the ground capturing moments anywhere and everywhere news breaks. And more than ever, they will be responsible for creating distinctive, immersive, visual content for all our platforms, working closely with our partners including Fusion and FiveThirtyEight.”
