Royal Return? W&L’s Michelle Drumbl on the Tax Consequences for Megan Markle’s Baby Drumbl commented in a NBC News story published on April 15.

Washington and Lee law professor Michelle Drumbl, director of the Tax Clinic, commented in a recent NBC News story about the tax consequences for someone sure to be one of the most famous American citizens living abroad: the baby of Prince Harry and Megan Markle.

As reported in the story, an American parent automatically passes on citizenship to their children who are born abroad, and the U.S. is one of the few countries that taxes nonresident citizens. This could lead to a sizable tax bill for the next member of the British royal family.
