W&L Ranked in Top 100 Schools Nationally for Use of Renewable Electricity The rankings are based on the amount of renewable energy available per full-time equivalent student.
Solar panels on the upper deck of the parking garage offset energy consumption.According to America’s Top Colleges for Renewable Energy, Washington and Lee University ranked 63 among U.S. colleges for its use of renewable energy, and it is one of only two colleges in Virginia to crack the top 100.
The rankings are based on the amount of renewable energy available per full-time equivalent student. The researchers examine how much renewable energy the university generates and divide that figure by the number of full-time students to produce the rankings.
When the researchers ranked schools for producing on-campus electricity, W&L shot up to 12th place nationally.
“It’s interesting to see the comparison framed this way,” said Jane Stewart, energy specialist at W&L. “We are doing a great job for a school of our size.”
Washington and Lee’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) has been updated to identify and adopt specific steps to be taken over the next decade in order to meet the university’s overall stainability goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“We are proud to be recognized for our use of renewable energy, and excited to see it expand.” said Stewart. “Higher education is really leading on climate action in many ways, and it is exciting to be a part of the progress.”
