The Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges selected Anthony Edwards, assistant professor of Arabic at Washington and Lee University, as the winner of the H. Hiter Harris III Faculty Rising Star Award for 2019. Washington and Lee University nominated Edwards for the award.

Edwards will be recognized at a luncheon ceremony in Richmond on Nov. 7.

The H. Hiter Harris III Rising Star Award was created in 2015 through an endowment gift from H. Hiter Harris III, managing director of Harris Williams & Co. The award includes a stipend to support the recipient’s scholarly research and professional development activities. Harris endowed this award to highlight the unique features of VFIC colleges and universities by recognizing faculty members “who are up and coming in their profession and reflect a strong, clear and abiding commitment to excellence in classroom teaching within the undergraduate liberal arts and sciences community.”

Founded in 1952, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges is a nonprofit fundraising partnership supporting the programs and students of 15 leading independent colleges in the Commonwealth: Bridgewater College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Hollins University, University of Lynchburg, Mary Baldwin University, Marymount University, Randolph College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, Shenandoah University, Sweet Briar College, University of Richmond, Virginia Wesleyan University and Washington and Lee University.
