Paul Hanstedt, director of the Center for Academic Resources and Pedagogical Excellence (CARPE) at Washington and Lee University, recently wrote an opinion piece for Inside Higher Ed titled “It’s Time to Get Rid of Distribution Requirements.”

In the op-ed, Hanstedt says, “The world’s a pretty messed-up place. Fixing that — or even just slowing the damage — is going to take more than students who’ve been drilled on the basics over and over again, in both high school and college. The basics matter. Content matters. But how this content is presented, and what students are enabled to do with this information and skills, also matters. Students need to step into the world having experienced more than siloed data regurgitation. Remediation by any other name still smells like limitation.”
