James Kahn, John F. Hendon Professor of Economics and Professor of Environmental Studies at Washington and Lee University, has been invited to give the opening keynote speech at the Exposition of Sustainability of the Industrial Pole of Manaus, a conference on sustainability of economic activities in the Brazilian Amazon.

Kahn is the only American and academic invited to be a keynote speaker at the conference.

In his talk, Kahn will explore how the policies of the Industrial Pole of Manaus can be extended to the other areas of the Amazon, which are experiencing higher levels of deforestation. Kahn will also discuss how certain types of economic reform in Brazil could reduce deforestation pressure.

The conference is organized by SUFRAMA, the agency charged with economic development in the Brazilian Amazon.

Kahn has written extensively on environmental and economic issues in the Brazilian Amazon and has been on the faculty of the Federal University of Amazonas since 1992.
