Christine Clancy, head women’s basketball coach and assistant director of athletics for physical education at Washington and Lee University, was selected as the 2023 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in voting conducted by the league’s coaches.

Clancy has led W&L to a school-record 22 wins (22-6) this season, claiming the program’s second conference title and first since 2010 with a 73-57 victory over Shenandoah University in the ODAC Championship game on Sunday, Feb. 26.

W&L’s season continues in the NCAA Division III Tournament on March 3 when the team travels to Ada, Ohio to take on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the opening round at Ohio Northern University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.

The ODAC Coach of the Year citation was the second straight for Clancy after she led the Generals to a 20-7 overall record and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2022. In 11 seasons at W&L, she has the most wins of any coach in program history with a 161-112 (.590) record. Clancy also coached one season at Colby College (2010-11), leading the Mules to a 22-6 mark and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Clancy has been a member of the W&L faculty since 2012 and she is in her first year as the head of W&L’s physical education program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brandeis University and a master’s degree in sports and exercise studies from Smith College.
