Aliaa Bassiouny, Lawrence Term Professor of Finance at Washington and Lee University, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Orascom Development Egypt (ODE), a leading developer of fully integrated towns and communities in Egypt.

Bassiouny will serve as an independent non-executive member of the board and a member of the audit committee of the company, which is a publicly listed member of the Egyptian stock exchange’s EGX30 index.

“Egypt’s regulatory authorities have been advocating increased women representation on boards with a national strategy intending to reach a minimum of 30% women representation by 2030,” said Bassiouny. “It is a great honor to not only contribute to this goal but also towards independent academic representation on boards, which research shows has an overall positive effect on firm governance and performance. I am excited by the potential for personal and professional development that I can bring back to the classroom and our students.”

ODE’s mission is to create destinations and build vibrant communities where people are inspired to work, play and live. It aims to elevate the benchmark of living with master-planned developments that foster connections to a mindset, community and a sense of belonging. ODE has a diverse portfolio of stunning destinations and popular tourist areas covering more than 50 million square acres of Egypt.

Bassiouny joined the W&L faculty in 2019 after seven years as a professor of finance at The American University in Cairo, where she chaired the Department of Management. At W&L, she serves as the faculty advisor for the Williams Investment Society, which was recently cited as the sixth-largest student-managed investment fund in the U.S. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA in finance from The American University in Cairo, as well as a Master of Research and Ph.D. in management sciences (finance) from Esade Business School (Spain).
