Brandon Spalding Named ODAC and NCAA South Region Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year The Generals’ 13th-year mentor was recognized for leading W&L to one of its best seasons in program history.
Brandon Spalding, Washington and Lee University head men’s cross country coach, was recently selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Coach of the Year and the NCAA South Region Coach of the Year after leading the Generals to the 2025 ODAC and NCAA South Regional championships.
Spalding received the ODAC Coach of the Year Award for the sixth time in his 13 seasons with the Generals. It was his first selection since the 2019 campaign. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional award was the first of his career.
W&L forged one of the best seasons in the program’s storied history during the 2025 season, winning the ODAC Championship by 27 points behind five runners who placed among the top 11 finishers at the championship meet. W&L runners crossed the finish line in first and second place, led by Sam Daunt ’28, who claimed the individual title.
The Blue & White went on to place seven runners among the top 50 finishers to win the NCAA South Regional title for just the second time in program history, joining the 1995 squad as a regional champion. The win qualified the Generals for the NCAA Division III Championship, where they produced a program-best 20th-place team finish.
Spalding has guided W&L to six ODAC Championships and two NCAA National Championship berths in his 13 seasons. Prior to arriving at W&L, he held coaching roles at Rhodes College and Bethany College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in health and exercise science from Bridgewater College.
