Washington and Lee University senior Brian Peccie ’20 has been named Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Leader of the Year in athletics. Peccie’s award is part of the national leadership honor society’s 2020 General Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year competition. He will receive a $1,000 post-graduate scholarship. Peccie is majoring in economics and math.
ODK, founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee, recognizes not only academic achievement, but also campus leadership in five areas of campus life: scholarship; athletics; campus and community service; journalism, speech and the mass media; and creative and performing arts. ODK has 317 circles at colleges and universities across the country.
Peccie was a two-time captain and four-year letter winner on the W&L men’s golf team. A three-time PING All-American golfer, he was selected as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Virginia/Farm Bureau Insurance scholar-athlete of the year in 2019 and 2020. Peccie also is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics) and Omicron Delta Epsilon (economics) national honor societies, and he participated in the Generals Leadership Academy, the University Ambassadors Program, the student-alumni relations group Kathekon, and is a lead class agent for the Class of 2020.
“I’m extremely honored to be recognized with this award, especially considering all of the other talented individuals across the country who were equally deserving,” said Peccie. “Leading is much easier when you are surrounded by others who share common goals and a strong desire to improve. Washington and Lee is filled with these individuals, and I’m forever thankful for my coaches and teammates who pushed me to the next level as a player and a leader. I view this award not just as a testament to my hard work from the last few years, but also as a promise to apply the leadership skills I have acquired and continue to develop as I begin my professional career.”
“Brian is a fitting recipient of ODK’s national award for leadership in athletics,” said Pete Gyscek, W&L men’s golf coach. “This recognition of Brian’s accomplishments highlights W&L’s strong tradition of leadership and the value of athletics in contributing to the undergraduate experience. Brian has been the epitome of the term student-athlete. He excelled both on the course and in the classroom, setting the standard for his teammates and our program.”
Following graduation, Peccie will begin working at Lincoln International, a global middle market investment bank, in Chicago.
