Catarina Passidomo ’04, associate professor of environmental studies at Washington and Lee University, recently contributed a book chapter to “The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Cultural and Social Geography.”
The book, a companion to the original version published in 2013, is edited by Ishan Ashutosh of Indiana University Bloomington and Jamie Winders from Syracuse University. It includes 46 individual chapters authored by leading authorities within two interconnected subdisciplines of geography.
Passidomo’s chapter explores the cultural geographies of food, examining the development of agrifood studies within geography since the mid-20th century. Her analysis demonstrates a trend away from traditional agricultural geography and toward more political-economic perspectives on food’s role in society.
Passidomo is in her second year as a faculty member at W&L. Prior to returning to her alma mater, she spent 10 years teaching Southern studies and anthropology at the University of Mississippi. Passidomo earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and anthropology from W&L, a Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in geography from Georgia.
