Colbert Presents Talk on Union’s Fields Medal Recipients Cory Colbert, assistant professor of mathematics at W&L, will present on this year’s International Mathematical Union’s Fields Medal on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Cory Colbert, assistant professor of mathematics at W&L, will present on this year’s International Mathematical Union’s (IMU’s) Fields Medal. The talk will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Harte Center, room 128, located in Leyburn Library.
Colbert will discuss the works of this year’s four Fields Medal recipients, Maryna Viazovska, June Huh, Hugo Duminil-Copin and James Maynard, with particular emphasis on the work of James Maynard, a professor at the Mathematical Institute in Oxford University. Maynard’s research focuses on analytic number theory, which has led to major advances in the understanding of the structure of prime numbers and in Diophantine approximation.
The talk, coordinated this year by Natalia Toporikova, associate professor of biology, features presentations by members of the W&L community who will provide background on the individuals who have won this year’s Nobel Prizes and other prestigious awards.
This talk is free and open to the public, with time for questions and discussion following the presentation.
