Why did you choose to complete your externship at NOCAP Sports?
I chose to extern with NOCAP Sports because I am very interested in the NIL world. Each day brings a new development or challenge to the current framework, making it an exciting field to explore.
How did you secure this externship?
I connected with Casey Floyd ’15L, my alumni mentor at NOCAP, during the spring of my 1L year. We had a great conversation, which led me to extern with NOCAP during the fall semester of my 2L year.
Describe your work experience and daily schedule.
My externship experience was very rewarding. Casey and I had weekly check-in calls to discuss my completed assignments and assign my next assignments. During these conversations, Casey would highlight areas of improvement for me. These assignments ranged from research on state-specific high school NIL regulations to drafting full agreements.
What are some skills you developed?
The first skill I developed was drafting a contract. Before my externship, I did not know where to start. Throughout the semester, I drafted and reviewed many contracts, which helped me understand the importance of each clause.
Furthermore, my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities were strengthened by the constantly changing NIL regulations, which were challenging to understand and address. Adapting my writing and ideas was difficult.
What surprised you about the work you did during your externship?
NOCAP Sports is a fully remote company. This aspect of the externship worried me at first because I have never been a fan of remote work. However, Casey and the team at NOCAP have mastered the remote workplace. I connected with several other NOCAP team members and enjoyed learning more about the company as a whole.
What was your favorite aspect of your experience?
I gained valuable hands-on experience that challenged me to think critically about real-world situations. I enjoyed working on these situations because it helped me grow as a law student while getting experience in a unique legal field.
