
From Screen to Square Film Screening: ‘Get on Up’ The upcoming screening is the third installment of the academic year and will be shown on April 2 in Stackhouse Theater.
The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will continue its Screen to Square film series at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, with a showing of the film “Get on Up” in Stackhouse Theater located inside the Elrod Commons.
The 2024-25 Screen to Square series focuses on the theme “Work, Play and Southern Racial Reality,” and each screening is followed by an interactive discussion between select panelists and the audience relative to each film’s subject matter. For the “Get on Up” screening, a member of the W&L faculty and a member of the Rockbridge community will lead a discussion on the film’s themes of music, self-expression and community. All screenings are free and open to the public and include drinks, pizza and dessert.
“Get on Up” is a 2014 biographical musical film about the life of singer James Brown, known as the “Godfather of Soul.” The movie, nominated for a Grammy and winner of Outstanding Motion Picture at the NAACP Image Awards, stars Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Dan Aykroyd. The film provides an upclose look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
