Gwen Marshall is the Assistant Director of Law Admissions. She has been at W&L Law nearly a year but previously worked at W&L on the undergraduate side in Financial Aid. A native of Lexington, Gwen moved out of state to attend the University of Florida for her bachelor’s degree and the University of Denver for her master’s in Religious Studies. She came back to her roots three years ago and now lives just outside of the city limits with her husband, Sean, who works remotely as a data analyst with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and two young children, Emmy (5) and Henry (1).

Q. Where is your favorite location on the W&L campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the Cohen Family Amphitheater. It is in between the Elrod Commons and Leyburn Library on the undergraduate side of campus. It often hosts live music and outdoor plays. I love it because the view is next level beautiful. It looks directly into the tops of trees that slope down into Woods Creek. In the summer on Fridays, there is free ice cream at the Commons. You can grab a cone, sit in the grass at the amphitheater, and listen to cicadas.

Q. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?
I am somewhat of a homebody and the home we own needs WORK. Most of my free time is spent on DYI home renovations. My husband and I have learned a lot from YouTube videos and my dad, who seems to know everything about home repair! When I have actual free time, I love going to concerts, hiking with the family, and crafting.

Q. Book/Podcast/TV Show Recommendation
Definitely check out the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix. They definitely lean into the spooky side of the 90s classic Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Kiernan Shipka is amazing in it. Also, the Mandalorian on Disney +. The new season is out this month! Podcast recommendations usually center around true crime and comedy…often times mixed together. My go to book genres tend to be fantasy and sci fi.

Q. Who inspires you?
My mom. She has always been so strong when she needs to stand up for something and so patient with my siblings and me growing up. I strive to be as supportive and loving as she is for my kids. In addition, she embodies the motto “It is never to late to start.” She went to college while I was in high school and started her own business after becoming a dietician!

Q. If you could have coffee or tea with one person, who would it be and why?
It would have to be my granddaddy. But it wouldn’t be tea or coffee. It would be a Tervis tumbler of Diet Coke. He was the funniest, most quick-witted person I have ever met. He could read a room in an instant and had never met a stranger. He was also fluent in three languages. The type of person that would make a speech that had everyone moved and could rob you blind playing cards. He was larger than life.

Q. What is an accomplishment you are proud of?
I am really proud of the life I have. Success for me has always been measured by the love of my family. I am so lucky to have my supportive husband and two beautiful kids. If everything fell apart at this instant, as long as I had them, I know I could make it.

Q. Favorite food/restaurant/drink?
I love Mexican food. Particularly Birria tacos! That is one thing I really miss moving from Colorado. I also love spicy food.

Q. Most used/enjoyable app on your phone?
Probably Pinterest. I have a million different boards ranging from exercise routines, cooking, renovation ideas, and kids’ birthday parties. It is usually my go-to when I am brainstorming anything. It keeps my ideas well organized and provides plenty of embarrassment when I look at boards I created 10+ years ago (I’m looking at you, burlap and lace).
