Meet a Colleague: Taylor Meeker Taylor Meeker serves as assistant director of alumni and career services marketing.
Q. How long have you worked at W&L?
I started at the Williams School in January 2016, so eight years. I did leave during the pandemic to be a content manager for an e-commerce software company but ultimately returned to W&L after nine months. I just couldn’t stay away! Now, I work in the Office of Alumni and Career Services.
Q. What do you like most about working at W&L?
The people and the sense of community (plus the extra time off during the holidays and laid-back summers!).
Q. Where is your favorite location on the W&L campus?
Probably the Liberty Hall Ruins. I’m fascinated by history and love to imagine what campus might have been like so long ago.
Q. Where did you grow up?
I’m from Hot Springs, Virginia, which is only about an hour away from campus. I visited Lexington a lot growing up.
Q. What is the most adventurous thing that you have ever done?
Thinking about this question, I’m realizing that I’m not very adventurous! As a senior in high school, I took an AP marine biology course and we traveled to St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands) to study fish. We weren’t allowed to take any technology (including headphones), we stayed at an environmental research center without electricity (or mirrors) and spent a lot of time with people from the island. The whole trip was a transformative experience for me.
Q. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Cuddle on the couch with my dogs and cross-stitch, or enjoy wine with my husband somewhere outside with a nice view.
Q. Who most inspires you?
My six-year-old son, Scout. He’s always positive and ready for anything. He reminds me daily to stop and enjoy the little things.
Q. What book are you reading now?
“My Dark Vanessa” by Kate Elizabeth Russell.
Q. What music are you listening to these days?
Usually, I’m listening to alternative rock or pop punk-ish bands. My favorite artists are Grouplove, Matt Maeson, CHVRCHES and MisterWives. Sometimes, I’ll be in the mood for harder rock, like Sleep Token or Bring Me The Horizon. I also have a playlist called “Nostalgia” that is packed with early 2000s emo music and I am not ashamed.
Q. What is your favorite film (movie) of all time?
“Sixteen Candles!”
Q. If they made a movie about your life, who would play you?
I feel like this is a trick question, but my husband says Megan Fox.
Q. Which historical figure do you most identify with and why?
I don’t know that I identify with her necessarily, but Cleopatra has always fascinated me. I love Egyptian history and the mystery that surrounds her.
Q. If you could have coffee with one person, who would it be and why?
Glennon Doyle. I fell in love with her after reading her novel “Untamed.” Her views on love, life, and motherhood are so refreshing. She encourages women to quit abandoning ourselves and abandon unrealistic expectations the world has of us instead. I highly recommend her podcast “We Can Do Hard Things.”
Q. Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
I auditioned for the part of Violet (the blueberry girl) in the 2005 film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Obviously, I didn’t get it.
Q. Anything else you’d like to share?
My first name is actually Amanda. My parents have always used my middle name. My mom says it’s because she dreamed I’d be a writer someday and she wanted me to have a first initial, so I sign my name A. Taylor Meeker. While I don’t write novels, I do freelance copywriting — I guess she wasn’t totally wrong!
