Wendy-Rains-600x400 Meet a Colleague: Wendy RainsWendy Rains, office manager, University Library

Q. How long have you worked at W&L?
I worked in Law School Student Affairs for four and a half years and then moved to University Libraries a little over two years ago. So, almost seven years total.

Q. What do you like most about working at W&L?
The friendships I developed with colleagues and students.

Q. Where is your favorite location on the W&L campus?
Leyburn Library’s main floor. I have a great view of students studying and socializing outside of my office.

Q. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the Tidewater area of Virginia, first in Newport News and then in Yorktown.

Q. What advice do you have for students?
Be undisturbed by the good opinion of others.

Q. What is the most adventurous thing that you have ever done?
I’m not sure whether to call it adventurous or foolhardy, but my husband and I have, on more than one occasion, quit our jobs and relocated to a completely new place — without any concrete plan in place.

Q. What book are you reading now?
I recently completed my third reading of “The World Could Be Otherwise” by Norman Fischer, and each time, I discover new insights. The book delves into the Buddhist concept of the six perfections — generosity, ethical conduct, patience, joyful effort, meditation and understanding — and explores how cultivating these virtues can reshape our lives and the world around us.

Q. What music are you listening to these days?
It varies widely from George Harrison to Krishna Das to T-Pain.

Q. What is your favorite film (movie) of all time?
I don’t think I have a favorite, but I LOVE to watch “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” when I need a good cry.

Q. If you could have coffee with one person, who would it be and why?
George Harrison — I have a lot of questions only he can answer.

Q. What is your desert island food?
Salad and nachos — there needs to be balance!

Q. What is your secret talent?
I can consciously induce a lucid dream and maintain lucidity for an extended amount of time without waking up.
