Nathaniel Graves Receives Award from the National Association for Higher Education Parent/Family Program Professionals The W&L assistant dean for first-year experience was cited for his work at Denison University.
Nathaniel Graves, assistant dean for first-year experience at Washington and Lee University, received the National Association for Higher Education Parent/Family Program Professionals’ (AHEPPP) Friends of Family Award on Nov. 19 at the AHEPPP National Conference held in Orlando, Florida.
Graves, who is in his first year at W&L, received the award for his work as associate dean of student support and director of orientation and first-year experience at Denison University during the 2024-25 academic year.
The Friends of Family Award recognizes professionals outside the traditional Parent and Family Program model who provide valuable support to families in various capacities. This award highlights the importance of service within the AHEPPP community and the broader profession, honoring individuals who exemplify many of AHEPPP’s core values.
“I share with families during orientation that my role allows me to sit with students in some of their most challenging conversations and celebrate with them in some of life’s greatest successes,” said Graves. “I am deeply grateful for the chance to partner with families in my work and appreciative of the colleagues who walk alongside me in creating an educational experience where all students matter and belong. I look forward to the opportunities and relationships we will continue to build in our work ahead.”
Graves joined the W&L community in June 2025 following four years at Denison. He also served in student affairs roles at the University of West Georgia and as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt University. He holds a Bachelor of Science in special education and elementary education from the University of Evansville and a Master of Education in higher education administration from Vanderbilt.
The AHEPPP was established in 2008 as the premier national association for higher education professionals who work with the parents and family members of college students. AHEPPP is dedicated to facilitating meaningful and lasting support of campus-based personnel who interact with the families of college students in any capacity.
