Simon Shaheen Trio to Perform at W&L The Oct. 28 concert is sponsored by the Pickens World Music series.
Washington and Lee University presents the Pickens World Music Concert, featuring the Simon Shaheen Trio, on Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall.
The Pickens World Music series is supported by the Pauline B. and Paul D. Pickens Fund for the Performing Arts, which brings non-Western European performing artists or groups to campus each year. Tickets are required and available online or in person at the Lenfest Box Office.
Shaheen is one of the most important Arab musicians of his generation and a virtuoso on the oud, a pear-shaped, non-fretted Arabic lute. He masterfully performs a range of musical genres, from traditional Arabic music to modern jazz, on both the oud and violin. He has performed at major performing arts centers across the United States, Middle East and Europe, and has appeared with Quincy Jones, Sting and Dave Brubeck. In 1994, Shaheen received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
