Student Organization Spotlight: BLSA BLSA is a student organization committed to advancing the status of Black individuals under the law and within the legal profession.
The Washington and Lee Black Law Students Association (BLSA) is a student organization committed to advancing the status of Black individuals under the law and within the legal profession. BLSA aims to support and advance the interests of its members and the broader Black community. In this effort, BLSA focuses on the recruitment and development of Black law students at W&L and seeks to build relationships between current students and alumni. In addition, BLSA enhances the academic and professional development of its members by informing them of employment and educational opportunities and by supporting their efforts to take advantage of them. The members of BLSA engage in community service within the Lexington community and participate in political action on issues facing the Black community at a local, state, national and global level. Lastly, BLSA encourages social interaction between its members and the wider W&L community to foster meaningful networks, greater understanding, and a stronger campus community.
What are the upcoming events scheduled for this year or any ongoing activities for the members in the group?
We organized a voter registration drive to help prepare for the Virginia gubernatorial election. We were really excited about this opportunity to engage with our community and encourage civic participation. Alongside that, BLSA continues to host ongoing activities for our members, from professional development and mentorship to social gatherings and service projects. It’s all about creating spaces where we can support each other, grow together, and make an impact both here at school and beyond.
How can alumni get involved?
Our executive board is always open to alumni pouring back into students, whether through mentorship, sharing career advice, speaking at events, or supporting initiatives like our voter registration drives. Alumni involvement not only strengthens our programming, but also, reminds students that they are part of a larger, supportive community of Black legal professionals.
Are there mentorship opportunities?
Of course! Each year, BLSA runs a mentorship program that pairs 1Ls and new members with upper-level law students. The program is designed to provide guidance, support, and advice as students navigate law school, and it also helps build lasting connections within our community.
Do you have any goals for the organization this year?
This year, our goal is to expand programming to create more opportunities for professional development, community engagement, and networking. We also aim to provide a safe and supportive space for all members, where students can connect, share experiences, and feel empowered throughout their law school journey.
How many law students are currently involved? How has the law school community supported students in this organization?
Our chapter currently has about 35 active members. The law school community has been a strong supporter of BLSA, providing guidance, resources, and encouragement that have allowed our members to compete successfully in the broader National Black Law Students Association competitions. Thanks to this support, our chapter has consistently earned recognition and won titles at both national and regional levels.
Is there anything else to share about the organization?
We’re proud to be creating spaces where Black law students can thrive, and we’re excited to leave a lasting legacy not only within BLSA, but across the entire W&L community. Our hope is that the work we’re doing now, whether through service, advocacy, or fellowship, will continue to inspire future classes to carry the torch forward.
