Student Organization Spotlight: SEIPLS The Sports, Entertainment, and Intellectual Property Law Society provides students with practical exposure to the law and opportunities to compete in external competitions.
In the Q&A below, the co-presidents of SEIPLS discuss the goals of the organization and how students and alumni can get involved with the group.
Tell us a little bit about the organization.
The Sports, Entertainment, and Intellectual Property Law Society (SEIPLS) primarily provides 1Ls with the opportunity to compete in external competitions—such as moot court, negotiations, and writing—that focus on sports, entertainment, or intellectual property law. We’ve traveled across the country, meeting sports executives, drafters of collective bargaining agreements, agents, and other industry professionals. Through these experiences, students gain practical exposure to areas of law that interest them while having fun and building valuable connections.
Do you have any upcoming events scheduled for the spring or some that happened earlier in the fall semester?
This spring, SEIPLS is preparing for the Tulane Soccer Negotiation Competition and the Villanova Virtual Football Negotiation Competition. We are also planning to host an internal competition open to all law students, with prizes for the winners. Earlier this year, we competed in Tulane’s Basketball and Football Negotiations Competitions with strong performances. Last fall, we finished runner-up in Villanova’s Baseball Arbitration Competition.
How can alumni get involved?
Alumni can get involved by serving as mentors, sharing their experiences, and helping students connect with industry professionals. Whether it’s providing insight into sports, entertainment, or intellectual property law, alumni support plays a crucial role in SEIPLS’ continued success.
Are there mentorship opportunities?
Absolutely! SEIPLS offers both internal and external mentorship opportunities. For example, one of our leaders has developed a close relationship with an NBA executive who has provided valuable guidance throughout his law school journey. We strive to create similar opportunities for our members, connecting them with professionals who can help shape their careers.
How many law students are currently involved?
SEIPLS currently has about 70 students involved, and we’re continuing to grow.
Is there anything else to share about the organization?
Give SEIPLS a shot! It’s a great way to explore fun areas of law without making a full commitment to practicing in the field. The competitions, networking opportunities, and hands-on experiences add some excitement to the law school journey.
