What did you do for work this summer?
This summer I was a J.D. Tax intern at Deloitte in their Chicago, IL office.
How did you find/get this position?
I knew I wanted to find a position that would be at the intersection of tax and law. I became passionate about tax from taking all of the tax courses offered my 2L year. I did online research and found that it really is possible to work at an accounting firm as a lawyer!
Describe your work experience.
I worked on the multi-state team that was composed of accountants and lawyers. We filed tax returns, researched tax legislation, and composed memorandum on state and local tax policies for entities that operate in multiple jurisdictions. Most of the work I did was for pass-through entities such as partnerships, and it was fascinating to learn about the complexities of taxation that come from operating as a company across state lines.
What were some skills you developed this summer?
This summer I had the opportunity to develop more technical skills in the field of tax and apply them to my research and writing projects. I also had the opportunity to network both remotely and in-person. In this new hybrid world, it was valuable to have practice meeting people virtually, and then transitioning to working with them in-person.
What surprised you about the work you did this summer?
I was most surprised by the amount of client interaction I had as an intern. I was able to sit-in on client meetings and produce work product that was going directly back to the clients! It made me feel like the work I was doing was having a real impact.
What was your favorite aspect of this summer work experience?
My favorite aspect of my summer work experience was the incredible community and culture at Deloitte. I pictured myself putting in many hours with my nose to grindstone and not having any fun at all. However, my experience was exactly the opposite! Getting to know and learn from my amazing team and fellow interns was a great bonus to interesting work.
Has this experience helped you figure out post graduate plans, and if so, how?
Yes, after spending the summer with Deloitte I will be returning as a Tax Consultant after graduation. I am so thrilled to keep working with the multi-state group.
How do you think this experience will shape the rest of your time at W&L Law?
After I learned I would be spending the summer with Deloitte, I pursued the opportunity to be a student attorney in the Tax Clinic. I have found the experience to not only be challenging and gratifying, but solidify my interest in tax moving forward.
