Incoming and outgoing leaders of Washington and Lee University’s fraternity and sorority chapters and councils took a moment to pause and celebrate their accomplishments on Monday, Dec. 1, at the Southern Inn.
The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) hosted its first banquet to thank students who are rotating out of leadership roles as chapter presidents and representatives on the Panhellenic Council (Panhel) Interfraternity Council (IFC) and National Pan-hellenic Council (NPHC) and to welcome student leaders who are stepping into those positions in 2026. Grace Miller, assistant director of fraternity and sorority life, said that beyond honoring students’ service to their respective organizations and councils, the evening created an intentional opportunity for student leaders to connect with university leadership.
“We have a strong commitment to FSL as a student affairs team, and we want to highlight their successes and contributions,” Miller said.
Among the incoming officers was Charlie Green ’28, who will serve as chapter president for his fraternity. Leadership, he explained, felt like a natural next step in his W&L experience.
“I’m looking forward to being the figurehead for such a great group of guys,” Green said, “steering the ship and keeping it going in the right direction.”
Gaby White ’27, outgoing Panhellenic vice president of programming and incoming Panhellenic president, also shared her reflections during the event. An economics major pursuing minors in data science and computer science, she brings a broad set of interests and experiences, including working as a resident advisor (RA).
White said she first realized the impact of Panhellenic work when she became an RA.
“I kind of always knew that I was passionate about making a real impact,” she explained, adding that she saw her involvement with Panhellenic as an opportunity to be a part of “a community that was about supporting everyone.”
As she steps into the presidency, she said she is eager to deepen collaboration.
“I’m really excited to continue creating collaboration between all of our organizations, as well as our different councils here on campus,” she said.
Several members of the Student Affairs Division gave remarks thanking students for their service, including Kyle McCoil, associate dean of student affairs and dean of sophomores and juniors; Leah Beard, assistant dean of student leadership, who has recently served as adviser to the Panhellenic Council; Grace Miller; and Vice President for Student Affairs Alex Miller. As the evening wound down, conversations turned to the year ahead. With formal recruitment for IFC and Panhel on the horizon, the banquet served as both a milestone and a launch point for student leaders looking forward to a busy Winter Term.
Vice President Miller says he hopes the event will become a tradition that affirms the university’s commitment to fraternity and sorority life and celebrates the students who dedicate their time, energy and creativity to sustaining it.
“Fraternity and sorority life encompasses 70% of our student population,” he said. “To be able to give back to those student leaders and recognize them for their contributions is really important.”
How to Join
Washington and Lee uses a deferred recruitment model, meaning a student’s first opportunity to join a fraternity or sorority occurs after completing their first term. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council (Panhel) host their formal recruitment processes in early January. National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations hold membership intake at various times during the academic year depending on approval from their respective international organizations.
Students interested in joining any organization are encouraged to attend informal meet-and-greets, info sessions and campus events to get to know chapters before formal recruitment or membership intake occurs. This structure gives students time to settle into academics and campus life before joining a Greek organization. More details are available on the Fraternity and Sorority Life website.
To be eligible for recruitment or membership intake, students must:
- Complete 12 W&L credit hours
- Hold at least a 2.5 GPA after incompletes are resolved
- Meet any chapter-specific requirements
