Virginia Court of Appeals to Hear Oral Arguments at W&L Law A three judge panel will hear a variety of cases on September 4 and 5.

This week, the Court of Appeals of Virginia will hear two days of oral arguments at Washington and Lee University School of Law. A panel of three judges will hear eight cases over the two-day session. Arguments will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. on both September 4 and September 5 in the Millhiser Moot Court Room, Sydney Lewis Hall.

Kyle McNew, a 2006 graduate of W&L Law, will be among the advocates appearing before the Court. McNew is a partner with MichieHamlett PLLC, based in Charlottesville, Virginia. In his practice, McNew focuses on issues and appeals arising out of personal injury and products liability cases. He is also an adjunct faculty member at W&L Law, where he teaches the Appellate Advocacy Practicum.

McNew’s case is first up on the Court’s docket. He is representing the appellees in the case Rae Lee Davis v. Susan D Goforth, et al. The case involves a dispute as to whether the mortgage on a property left to Davis in a will should have been exonerated by the estate instead of passing with the land.

Following the first morning of arguments, the judges on the panel will be available for a question and answer session beginning at noon. Professor Alexandra Klein will moderate the discussion.

Guests to the hearing will be allowed an electronic device for notetaking, but bags and backpacks will be prohibited. Be advised that local and state law enforcement officials will be present in the building on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to prepare the building for the visit and provide security.

Beginning Tuesday afternoon, the Moot Courtroom, the Jury Room and Judges’ Chambers will be locked and off limits thru end of session on Thursday. A portion of Law School parking for faculty and staff will be closed as well.
