W&L Dance Program Celebrates 20 Years The anniversary weekend, March 26-28, will feature alumni master classes and performances from alumni and current students.
Washington and Lee University’s Office of Alumni Engagement and Department of Theater, Dance and Film Studies will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the dance program at W&L with a special weekend event on March 26-28 on W&L’s campus.
Registration is required to attend and can be accessed online. There will be a $10 cost to attend one of the three performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
The weekend-long programming will include classes, demonstrations and performances, and it is a chance to reconnect with fellow Theater, Dance and Film Studies (TDFS) alumni, current students and faculty and to celebrate the legacy of the dance program at W&L.
Throughout the weekend, there will be multiple opportunities to hear and learn from dance alumni. Zaq Lawal ’10 will host an “Afro-Dance” master class at 1 p.m. on March 26 and Nacho Portela ’15 will host a “Movement Tools: Improv” master class at 4:30 p.m. on March 27. A community salsa dance class is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on March 28, led by Sandra Meythaler, visiting assistant professor of dance. All three dance classes are free and open to the public.
Additional events include a round table discussion with alumni on “Arts after W&L” at 5:30 p.m. on March 25 and a catered reception at the W&L Dance Studio at 9 p.m. on March 27, featuring aerial and modern dance performances by Zach Baldridge ’20 and Ell Emadian ’17.
The anniversary celebration will also feature dance alumni performing alongside current members of the W&L Repertory Dance Company in a special, curated performance led by Jenefer Davies, chair of the Department of TDFS and director of the W&L Repertory Dance Company. Davies founded the dance program at W&L in 2006.
The performances will take place in the Keller Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on March 26 and March 27 and at 2 p.m. on March 28 and will include art installation work in Kamen Gallery created by Sara Dotterer ’18 and Emadian. Tickets are required and can be purchased online during registration.
