Several members of the W&L Law faculty will present at the annual academic conference hosted by the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). The conference runs January 7–11 and is being held in San Francisco.

W&L Law Dean Melanie Wilson, who currently serves as president of the AALS, will participate in a number of panels and events as she caps off her year leading the organization. On January 9, she will lead a plenary session addressing this year’s Annual Meeting theme, “Courage in Action.” Dean Wilson will engage women leaders from the legal academy and the legal profession in a conversation about how they summoned the courage necessary to pave a path for future generations of exceptional women professors, deans, and advocates. Among the panelists for this session is Elizabeth B. Prelogar, the 48th Solicitor General of the United States, who is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all Supreme Court litigation on behalf of the U.S. She is the second woman to serve in the position.

On January 10, Professor Suzette Malveaux will receive the 2025 Clyde Ferguson, Jr. Award from the AALS Section on Minority Groups. The annual award is named in honor of the late Clarence Clyde Ferguson, Jr., a professor of law and a U.S. ambassador. The award recognizes an outstanding legal educator who, during their career, has achieved excellence in the areas of public service, teaching, and scholarship. Ferguson Award winners are also recognized for the support, encouragement, and mentoring they provide to their colleagues, students, and current or aspiring members of the profession.

Other faculty presentations include the following:

  • Sarah Haan will present on a pedagogy-focused panel on January 8 that will examine how instructors experience and respond to classroom disruptions and interruptions, and what kind of support law schools can provide to the affected instructors.
  • Alexandra Klein will present her research during a January 11 works-in-progress roundtable where faculty receive feedback on forthcoming scholarship.
