W&L Presents an Evening with Acclaimed Classical Music Performers The Nov. 1 performance is sponsored by the university’s Concert Guild.
The Department of Music at Washington and Lee University presents the works of Ana Leia Carnero, Felix Mendelssohn and Marcus Maroney, performed by acclaimed classical musicians from across the country, at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 in Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Arts.
The performance is sponsored by W&L’s Concert Guild, which brings professional performing artists to campus each year for concerts and master classes. Tickets are required and are available online or in person at the Lenfest Center box office.
The program will open with Carnero’s “Carnavalito XXI” performed by W&L’s Jakob Hofer and the Kaufman Music Center’s Nurit Pacht. Hofer, a violin instructor at Southern Virginia University and lecturer in music at W&L, appreciates how a violin duet can “create space for an extra virtuosic flair to be ingrained in the fabric of the music.” He describes the interplay of the two violins as “simultaneously chaotic and expressive” in a style that is “joyful, captivating and sometimes sensuous.”
The duet will be followed by a trio comprised of Pacht, cellist Caroline Stinson from Duke University, and pianist Akiko Konishi, lecturer in music at W&L. The trio will perform Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1, Op. 49 in D Minor and Maroney’s “Three Midnights,” a piece commissioned by the Concert Guild from the Houston-based composer.
“It’s an honor to work with these remarkable performers who are equally at ease with playing classical standards and new music commissions,” Konishi said.
Order your tickets online today or call the Lenfest Center box office at 540-458-8000 for ticket information. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
