W&L Professor Publishes Book in English Translation with Full Annotations Hongchu Fu offers a look into the Yuan Dynasty under Mongol Rule in “Three Yuan Plays by Yang Zi.”
Hongchu Fu, professor of Chinese language and literature at Washington and Lee University, recently published the book “Three Yuan Plays by Yang Zi,” which offers an English translation of three plays written by Yang Zi, the Yuan dynasty playwright, court official and ocean-shipping tycoon.
Fu’s book provides extensive annotations of the original Chinese version and offers a unique perspective on the life of Yang Zi during the Yuan Dynasty under Mongol rule. He conveys the way a Yuan zaju play was composed and offers a general introduction to the plays and their theatrical features. The anthology is a useful collection of Chinese dramas for Western readers interested in learning about the Yuan zaju genre and provides a window through which readers can perceive the complicated mental activities of a Han intellectual serving the Mongol court.
Fu has been a member of the W&L faculty since 2002. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Tsitsihar Teachers’ College, a master’s degree in English language and literature from Fudan University and a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles.
