W&L Professors Selected by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) for their Summer Grants for Teaching Pedagogies Denny Garvis and Zoila Ponce de León presented a two-day online workshop on applying adaptive and interactive learning practices in undergraduate statistics courses.
Denny Garvis and Zoila Ponce de LeónWashington and Lee Professors Denny Garvis and Zoila Ponce de León teamed with Professor Lilla Orr from the University of Richmond to present a two-day online workshop for the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS).
The trio’s workshop focused on the application of adaptive and interactive learning practices while teaching statistics to undergraduate students and was selected by the ACS for a summer grant through their Teaching Pedagogies program.
Garvis, professor of business administration; Ponce de León, assistant professor of politics; and Orr, an assistant professor of data science and statistics at Richmond, presented their online workshop on July 25 and July 28 to a variety of faculty members teaching statistics to undergraduates at ACS schools.
A primary emphasis of the sessions was to introduce and demonstrate the adaptive learning processes embedded in the statistics courseware materials created and supported by the Open Learning Initiative (OLI), a flagship project of the Simon Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University. An additional focal point included interactive projects and assignments for which timely and substantial instructional feedback is provided to student learners.
Garvis has been a member of the W&L faculty since 1998. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa and a doctorate degree from Georgia State University. Ponce de León has been teaching at W&L since 2018. She holds degrees in political science from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (bachelor’s) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (master’s and doctorate).
