Washington and Lee University’s Contact Committee will welcome designer and founder Stuart Weitzman to campus at 5 p.m. on March 18 in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons.

The event is co-sponsored by the Provost’s Office and is free and open to the W&L community. Tickets are required and will be available to pick up in Elrod Commons on March 4 and 5.

In his lecture, “A Designer’s Entrepreneurial Journey on the Road Less Traveled,” Weitzman will discuss his lifelong passion for design and how he came to create the internationally renowned shoe brand that bears his name (his shoes are sold in more than 70 countries). Founded in 1986, the company was acquired by Coach in 2015 and Weitzman retired; he now focuses on inspiring and leading the next generation of entrepreneurs and fashion designers.

Weitzman is also a committed philanthropist, supporting a wide range of hospitals, medical research centers, youth and sports organizations, cultural institutions and museums. He regularly mentors students on their entrepreneurial and design aspirations at several universities, including Williams College, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, California Institute of Technology, Rice University, Smith College, Stanford University, the University of Chicago and the London Business School.

A graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, the university has honored him by renaming their design and architecture school the Stuart Weitzman School of Design.

In addition to his lecture, Weitzman will visit with students in classes taught by Elliott King, professor of art history, and Jay Margalus, Johnson Professor of Entrepreneurship and Leadership and director of the Connolly Center for Entrepreneurship.
