Anthony Edwards, assistant professor of Arabic at Washington and Lee University, recently published an article in Philological Encounters titled “An Incomplete Journey Away from the Past: The Life and Ideas of Antonius Ameuney (1821–1881).”
According to Edwards, the article highlights the life and ideas of Antonius Ameuney, “a forgotten Arab intellectual from the 19th century, and his complicated personal and professional life between two worlds: late Ottoman Beirut and Victorian London.”
“I have been fascinated by Ameuney for nearly a decade because he was actively engaged in social and cultural projects in Beirut, alongside prominent figures of the Arab Nahḍa, the ‘Renaissance,'” Edwards said. “Yet historians and scholars have entirely overlooked him.”
