W&L’s Ellen Mayock Presented at the Carmen Laforet Conference and Exhibition The Instituto Cervantes invited Professor Mayock to Spain to speak at the inaugural event for the Centenary Celebration of Carmen Laforet in March 2022.
Ellen Mayock, Ernest Williams II Professor of Spanish at Washington and Lee University, was invited by the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid, Spain in March 2022 to speak at the inaugural event for the Centenary Celebration of Carmen Laforet, a canonical 20th-century Spanish author.
“I was honored to present at the Carmen Laforet Conference and Exhibition, sponsored by Spain’s premier cultural institution, the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid,” said Mayock. “Carmen Laforet is a celebrated 20th-century Spanish author whose works address important themes of silence, violence and belonging in the bleak landscape of Spain’s Franco years. This event at the Cervantes brought together leading Laforet scholars to celebrate this groundbreaking author’s centenary and inaugurate the Instituto’s exhibit on Laforet’s life and work on display through the end of May. My presentation addressed questions of women’s ambition and education in Laforet’s short stories.”
