W&L’s SonoKlect Series Presents the Music of Royce Campbell The jazz guitarist will be accompanied by the Vosbein Magee Big Band at the Sept. 28 performance.
Washington and Lee University presents jazz guitarist Royce Campbell, accompanied by the Vosbein Magee Big Band, on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall, followed by a reception in Lykes Atrium in the Lenfest Center for the Arts. The performance is part of the SonoKlect Series, a program dedicated to bringing modern music to local audiences in Lexington, VA.
The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
A titan among jazz guitarists and composers, Campbell’s soul-stirring melodies and masterful improvisations promise to ignite your passion for jazz and leave you spellbound. He is revered by icons like Quincy Jones — who said that “every note Royce Campbell plays is perfect” — and Henry Mancini, who offered Campbell a coveted spot in his touring ensemble for two decades. Cambell’s musical journey is rich with collaboration and innovation, having shared stages and studios with musical legends including Marvin Gaye, Mel Tormé, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Dave Brubeck and Rosemary Clooney.
The Sept. 28 performance will showcase Campbell’s original compositions, brilliantly arranged for big band by the esteemed arranger Carroll DeCamp (who is Campbell’s uncle), and features the dynamic Vosbein Magee Big Band. Formed by composer Terry Vosbein and trumpet virtuoso Chris Magee in 2015, the Lexington-based band is comprised of regional musicians who are all masters of their craft.
