Washington and Lee University’s Staniar Gallery is pleased to present “Private Pictograph,” a solo exhibition by South Korean artist Minjeong An. The exhibit will be on view from Sept. 4 through Oct. 17. An will also give an artist’s talk on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Arts, followed by a reception.

The exhibition and reception events are free and open to the public.

Using mathematical and scientific principles, Minjeong An creates digital renderings of subjects including the mother, the family, the natural world and the human body. These chart-like, diagrammatic drawings quantify and visualize abstract notions, with a specific emphasis on the realm of emotion. Drawing imagery from memories and everyday life, the artist illustrates the invisible, juxtaposing subjective experience with objective methods of measurement. The resulting images appear rational and complex, yet An seeks not only to draw the viewer into the subtle dimensions of her personal experience, but also to make the viewer laugh.

An was born in Chorwon, South Korea, and currently lives and works in Seoul. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Seoul National University of Science and Technology, where she is currently a part-time lecturer. An has exhibited at institutions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, P21 Gallery in Seoul, and Seventeen Gallery in London. Her work was also included in the 2024 Shanghai Biennale.

This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Department of Mathematics.
