Adam Scales Receives Prestigious Academic Coaching Certification W&L’s assistant director of academic resources completed a rigorous program to earn the International Coaching Federation’s ACC certification.

Adam Scales, assistant director of academic resources within the Houston H. Harte Teaching and Learning Center at Washington and Lee University, recently earned Associate Coaching Certification (ACC) through the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Scales was certified after completing a rigorous program that included educational and practical experience, mentor coaching and performance evaluation, and was capped by a three-hour competency-based exam. In all, Scales logged more than 150 hours of education programming through the University of California, Davis, along with 10 hours of professional mentor coaching and more than 100 experimental coaching hours to earn ICF’s certification.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized by the ICF, the leading global organization for coaches and coaching,” said Scales. “This credential signifies a commitment to high professional and ethical standards that will strengthen the provision of academic support in the Harte Center for Teaching and Learning. We will use this certification experience to enhance the training and development of our talented peer tutors and academic coaches who enrich the learning of our diverse student community. I look forward to building on the strengths of the Harte Center’s academic resources in partnership with our dedicated faculty and staff at W&L.”

Since arriving at W&L in 2021, Scales has been responsible for overseeing programs and initiatives that foster student learning and success, including academic coaching, peer tutoring, academic support programming and learning resource projects. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in film and English studies, and a Ph.D. in media from the University of East Anglia (U.K.). He also earned a Master of Education in higher and postsecondary education from Arizona State University.
