DeLaney Center to Launch its 2025-26 Screen to Square Film Series with ‘Sinners’ The first film of this year’s series will take place on Oct. 1 in Stackhouse Theater.

The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will begin its 2025-2026 Screen to Square film series at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons with a screening of the culturally phenomenal movie “Sinners.” The event is free and open to the general public, with complimentary pizza, beverages and desserts being served to attendees.
This year’s Screen to Square Series will feature films and discussions that revolve around the theme of “Racial Adversity and Southern Resilience.”
This theme plays a central role in the subject matter explored in Ryan Coolger’s 2025 movie “Sinners.” Following the screening, panelists – including members of the Lexington/Rockbridge community and W&L professors – will initiate a dialogue with the audience relating to matters of small business ownership, cultural commemoration and the horror film genre.
“Sinners” is a 2025 American horror movie set in the Jim-Crow era of 1930s Mississippi that touches on assimilation, racial oppression and African-American identity. The movie follows two troubled brothers – played dually by Micheal B. Jordan – as they return to their hometown in hopes of establishing new lives, only to be met with supernatural entities that attempt to prevent the two men from making their dreams a reality. The film, which reached an approximate $366 million globally, features additional stars such as Hailee Steinfield, Wunmi Mosaku, Delory Lindo, Jack O’Connell and Miles Caton.
The DeLaney Center is an interdisciplinary academic forum that promotes teaching and research on race and Southern identity. Visit the DeLaney Center website for updates on further Screen to Square film screenings, DeLaney Dialogues and other programming.
