Q. Tell us a little about yourself.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture science from West Virginia University. I have a very spoiled blue heeler named Luca.

Q. How do you unwind or have fun? Any hobbies or hidden talents?
In the summer, I love to work in the garden. I started canning green beans and tomatoes last year. I’m looking forward to canning/preserving other veggies such as squash and peppers. Maybe making a few pickles too. After working in the garden, I enjoy laying by the pool to relax. You can always find me walking or playing fetch with my dog, Luca.

Q. Tell us a little about you and your background.
I am married to Carrie Kirk, and we have two adult children – Lauren and Reed. I grew up less than an hour from Lexington, so returning to the area is like coming home. I have an interdisciplinary doctorate degree focused on nonprofit studies and community development from Virginia Tech.

Q. How do you unwind or have fun? Any hobbies or hidden talents?
Vegetable gardening and cooking are my main hobbies, but I also travel and read (fiction and poetry) as much I can.

Q. Anything you are looking forward to in particular at W&L?
Getting to know this community and working with colleagues to expand the reach of lifelong learning programs.

John Wolfgang, Assistant Director of Admissions – Admissions

John-Wolfgang-scaled-600x400 Get to Know the Newest Members of the W&L Community - 6/28/23John Wolfgang, assistant director of admissions

Q. Tell us a little about you and your background.
I’m moving to W&L to be closer to family after spending the past two and a half years working in admissions at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. I graduated from Columbia University in 2019 with a degree in mathematics.

Q. How do you unwind or have fun? Any hobbies or hidden talents?
I like being active, so I spend a decent bit of time in the gym, and I enjoy basically any team game besides basketball. Ultimate is the one I was most involved with at my last school, and it’s probably my favorite. I also play video games with a lot of my friends from high school as a way to keep in touch, and when I catch up with them in person I like to go fishing.

Q. Anything you are looking forward to in particular at W&L?
I think just the community. I’m coming from a really small school and have enjoyed getting to interact with people on campus in a ton of different capacities, so the fact that I’ve been fortunate enough to land at another institution where that interconnectedness seems to be a priority is super exciting. From a more admissions-centric lens, I’m excited to work at an institution that can meet full demonstrated need for all the students we serve.
