Meet a Colleague: Emily Pogue Emily Pogue serves as senior associate director of annual giving.
Q. How long have you worked at W&L?
I’ve worked at W&L for three years.
Q. What is the favorite aspect of your job at W&L?
My favorite aspect of my role in University Development is the opportunity to work with so many people within the W&L community – students, faculty, staff and alumni. Their kindness and genuine love of W&L make this work especially meaningful, and it’s inspiring to see how deeply each person cares about the university and its future.
Q. If you chose a different path, what other career would you have?
If I were a little braver, I would love to travel the world as a National Geographic Explorer. If I could dance, I’d love to be a Broadway performer.
Q. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town in central Pennsylvania.
Q. What was your favorite subject in school?
World Cultures. That class sparked a curiosity to learn more about the world and how people experience it differently.
Q. What three words describe you best?
Goofy, musical and curious.
Q. Name one person from history you would like to spend a day with and why.
Agatha Christie. I would love to learn about her writing process and maybe crack the case on where she was during her 11-day disappearance.
Q. Who is the most famous person you have met and where did you meet them?
I have a lot of “almost” stories with famous people. I don’t know that I’ve actually shared words with a famous person. Martina McBride and her family were on the same walking tour of Bath, England as mine. I passed Seth Rogen in a hallway of Congress. Cedric the Entertainer and Bob Saget were in first class on a flight to LA. I stood next to Auli’i Cravalho of Moana fame waiting for an Uber outside of the Kennedy Center. I was front row at a Maroon 5 concert in Copenhagen.
Q. What do you like to do away from work?
My new favorite hobby is being mom to my 15-month-old daughter. I can now add skills like infant fashion design and cardboard box home construction to my resume.
Q. What is your least favorite chore at home?
Dusting.
Q. What is your favorite family holiday tradition?
I haven’t been able to attend as much as an adult, but I really enjoy visiting my dad’s family for Thanksgiving because my aunt and uncle would host international students from Skidmore College for the meal. It was a fun opportunity to meet new people and share customs and traditions from around the world.
Q. What is the most adventurous thing that you have ever done?
I haven’t checked off any of the stereotypical thrill-seeker feats like jumping out of a plane, but I’ve been lucky to have some unforgettable experiences around the world, from visiting an island of monkeys in Panama, to sledding down a volcano in Nicaragua, witnessing a whirling dervish ritual in Turkey, and sea kayaking in Sweden.
Q. What is your all-time favorite food or food dish?
My mom’s brisket.
Q. Where would you choose to build your dream home?
My dream home is anywhere my family and friends are. So long as they all move to Scotland with me.
Q. If you could choose one series to binge-watch, what would it be?
“Friends.”
Q. What is your all-time favorite movie?
“Jaws.”
Q. What song or artist could you play on repeat?
For artist – Sara Bareilles, Taylor Swift and Carole King. Really any female singer-songwriter.
For song – “Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root. That song is an instant mood booster.
Q. Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
I’m related to Myron Cope, the creator of the Pittsburgh Steeler’s Terrible Towel.
