Paul Trible ’71L Honored for Service to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has proclaimed July 31, 2022 to be The Honorable Paul S. Trible, Jr. Day in the commonwealth of Virginia.

Governor Glenn Youngkin has proclaimed July 31, 2022 to be The Honorable Paul S. Trible, Jr. Day in the commonwealth of Virginia. Trible is a 1971 graduate of W&L Law and recently retired as president of Christopher Newport University, a position he held for more than 25 years.

Youngkin’s proclamation recognizes Trible’s accomplishments as a law clerk in the United States District Court for Eastern Virginia, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, commonwealth’s attorney for Essex County, as United States congressman, United States senator and president of CNU.

Certificate of Recognition

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

The Honorable Paul S. Trible, Jr. Day

WHEREAS, the Honorable Paul Seward Trible, Jr., born on December 29, 1946 to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Trible, attended schools in New Orleans, Louisiana and Clark’s Summit, Pennsylvania and returned often to the Trible family home in the Northern Neck of Virginia; and,

WHEREAS, he continued his education in Virginia earning a bachelor of arts degree from Hampden-Sydney College and a law degree from Washington and Lee University; and,

WHEREAS, Paul Trible devoted his life to public service as a law clerk in the United States District Court for Eastern Virginia, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Commonwealth Attorney for Essex County, United States Congressman, United States Senator, and president of Christopher Newport University; and,

WHEREAS, Paul Trible was appointed the fifth president of Christopher Newport University on January 2, 1996 with the expectation of transforming it into a best-in-class institution, intentionally focused on liberal arts and sciences; and,

WHEREAS, during his 26 years of exemplary leadership, the university’s endowment fund grew from $300,000 to $64 million dollars, over one billion dollars in capital projects were completed, enrollment and graduation rates soared, and the university received national recognition for academic excellence; and,

WHEREAS, President Trible, supported by his loving wife Rosemary and children, Mary Katherine and Paul, created a legacy that will impact future generations of students, faculty, and staff of Christopher Newport University to be Captains who are committed to scholarship, leadership, service and leading lives of significance; and,

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia commends the visionary leadership, sacrifice, dedication, and lifetime of contributions made by the Honorable Paul Seward Trible, Jr. as he has strengthened the Spirit of Virginia as the fifth President of Christopher Newport University;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize July 31, 2022 as THE HONORABLE PAUL S. TRIBLE, JR. DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
