Spencer Cox, a 2001 graduate of the School of Law and the current governor of Utah, will serve as the law school’s commencement speaker for the Class of 2024 in May.

Commencement is scheduled for Friday, May 10 beginning at 10 a.m. on the lawn in front of University Chapel. The event is open to the public.

Cox was elected governor of Utah in 2020, following a lengthy career in public service. After graduating from W&L, Governor Cox clerked for U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart and then joined the Salt Lake City law firm of Fabian and Clendenin. He eventually returned to Fairview, the small Utah town where he was born and raised, to serve as vice president of CentraCom, a rural telecommunications company, and to work his family farm.

Governor Cox served as a city counselor and mayor of Fairview and a Sanpete county commissioner before his election in 2012 to the Utah House of Representatives. In 2013 he was appointed by then Utah Governor Gary Herbert to the vacant Lieutenant Governor position, and subsequently won reelection with Herbert in 2016.

Cox was sworn in as Utah’s 18th governor on Jan. 4, 2021. In 2023, he was elected to lead the National Governors Association.
