Washington and Lee law professor Joshua Fairfield provided analysis for a feature story on Vox.com examining how property rights have been impacted by the rise of digital ownership. In particular, Fairfield helps explain how the ruling in the case MAI Systems Corp. v Peak Computer Inc. has given companies broad control over computer-driven products by allowing manufacturers to determine how, or even if, a consumer can modify or repair their property.

“Anytime someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you, and won’t give you a key, they’re not doing it for your benefit,” said Fairfield.
