Washington and Lee University presents a faculty recital on May 11 titled “Arias and Barcarolles,” highlighting three W&L faculty members: cellist Julia Goudimova, harpsichordist William McCorkle and tenor Scott Williamson.

The performance is free and open to the public in the Wilson Concert Hall, located in the Lenfest Center for the Arts. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and will also be streamed online at https://livestream.com/wlu.

The recital will include songs and arias by composers Claudio Monteverdi, Vincenzo Bellini and Benjamin Britten. The performance will also feature one of Antonio Vivaldi’s cello sonatas and Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Aria variata alla maniera Italiana.”

“The recital’s content all connects to Venice,” said Williamson. “The rocking lilt of the ‘barcarole’ originated in a city whose most famous form of public transportation is the gondola. The program centers around the Venetian baroque from Monteverdi to Vivaldi. It also features Italian-inspired journeys to Germany courtesy of Bach and Elizabethan England via Benjamin Britten.”
