W&L Presents Screening of the West End’s ‘Dr. Strangelove’ The Jan. 20 screening features BAFTA Award winner Steve Coogan in four roles.

The Lenfest Center for the Arts at Washington and Lee University continues its National Theatre Live series with a screening of “Dr. Strangelove” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, 2026 in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons.
The screening of “Dr. Strangelove” is the next installment of the Lenfest Center’s Outreach & Engagement (O&E) series. Tickets are required and can be purchased online or in person at the Lenfest Center box Office.
W&L’s National Theatre Live series features screenings of seven top British theater productions, connecting university knowledge and art experiences on the W&L campus and beyond to the local community in a mutually beneficial partnership. Most recently, “Present Laughter” was screened on Nov. 4, 2025; future screenings from the series include “A Streetcar Named Desire” on Feb. 10 and “Inter Alia” on March 10.
Seven-time BAFTA Award winner Steve Coogan plays four roles in the world premier stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film, starring as Dr. Strangelove, Captain Mandrake and President Muffley (roles originated by Peter Sellers in the film), as well as Major TJ Kong. A comedic satire about a rogue U.S. general who triggers a nuclear attack and the ensuing race to avert global destruction, “Dr. Strangelove” reflects the anxieties about nuclear war that peaked in the mid-twentieth century in the aftermath of the atomic bomb and amid Cold War tensions between the U.S. and Russia.
“Dr. Strangelove” remains one of the most influential films in cinematic history, and its commentary on nuclear weapons and global politics continues to resonate with modern audiences. Coogan’s unique comedic timing and dramatic range bring new energy to the role(s), in a performance Broadway World called “a masterful recreation of sublime comic acting.”
Filmed live during its recent run at the Noël Coward Theatre on London’s West End, “Dr. Strangelove” is directed by Sean Foley, who co-adapted the production with Armando Iannucci.
