W&L Presents Screening of the West End’s ‘Inter Alia’ The March 10 screening features Rosamund Pike in a new one-woman play by Suzie Miller.
The Lenfest Center for the Arts at Washington and Lee University continues its National Theatre Live series with a screening of “Inter Alia” at 7:30 p.m. on March 10 in Stackhouse Theater in Elrod Commons.
The screening is also part of the Lenfest Center’s Outreach & Engagement (O&E) series. Tickets are required and can be purchased online or in person at the Lenfest Center box office.
W&L’s National Theatre Live series features screenings of seven top British theater productions, connecting university knowledge and art experiences on the W&L campus and beyond to the local community in a mutually beneficial partnership. Most recently, “A Streetcar Named Desire” was screened on Feb. 10; the final screening of the series will be “The Fifth Step” on April 14.
Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike stars in Suzie Miller’s one-woman play as Jessica, a maverick London Crown Court judge at the top of her career. Jessica is sharp, compassionate and determined to change a system she knows isn’t always just, but her career exists “inter alia” (“among other things”) as she balances motherhood, friendship and the elusive notion of “having it all.” When an event threatens to throw her life completely off balance, can she hold her family upright?
“Inter alia” is a legal term, but Miller uses it in her play to also demonstrate how working women balance their careers “among other things,” including domestic responsibilities and carrying the emotional load of a household. Miller noted that there are many invisible lines and boundaries that women must negotiate between motherhood, marriage, professional lives and being women in society, along with the additional layer of social judgment. While Jessica’s character is literally a judge, she is also being judged — by others and herself — for her parenting, her work hours, her femininity and feminism, her role as a life partner and more.
Filmed live during its 2025 opening run at the Lyttlelton Theatre on London’s West End, “Inter Alia” is directed by Justin Martin.
