W&L Presents Student Production of ‘Almost, Maine’ The play runs Nov.11-14 in the Johnson Theatre in the Lenfest Center for the Arts.
The Department of Theater, Dance and Film Studies at Washington and Lee University presents “Almost, Maine,” a 2004 play by actor and playwright John Cariani. Performances will take place in the Johnson Theatre in the Lenfest Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11-13 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 14.
Tickets are required and available online or in person at the Lenfest Center box office.
Directed by Jeremy West, visiting assistant professor of theater at W&L, “Almost, Maine” is a heartfelt romantic comedy set in the town of Almost, in northern Maine. The play follows 10 couples who, while in different locations on a Friday night, all experience a singular magical moment as the northern lights appear. Love is found, hearts are broken, heads are bumped, and audiences will be captivated as metaphor becomes literal in this small northern town on a cold, clear, mid-winter night.
“I’m inspired to find the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) in all things, and the beauty of imperfection is not only in the material,” West said. “If this play is performed as the playwright intended, there is no sentimentality. There is truth in these relationships, and the truth is the beauty.”
“Almost, Maine” is supported by the work of W&L faculty and staff, with lighting design by Owen Collins, professor of theater and head of the Department of Music; costume design by Elizabeth Wislar, costume shop manager; stage management by Paula Fritz, the theater department’s producing stage manager; and technical direction from Tom Hackman, theater technical director. The production also features the work of guest artists, including prop designer Duckery Bracey ’20, props director for Maine State Music Theatre; sound designer Simon Marland ’20, assistant professor of theatre at James Madison University; intimacy director Haley Roberts, intimacy choreographer at the American Shakespeare Center; and scenic designer David Dwyer, associate professor of theatre at Southern Virginia University.
