Lucas-Kim-600x400 W&L Student Accepted into Public Policy and International Affairs Program

Washington and Lee University student Lucas Kim ’27 has been accepted into the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute Fellowship Program hosted by Princeton University.

The seven-week program seeks to prepare students from diverse backgrounds for graduate study and careers in public policy by fostering the development of skills essential for the analysis, evaluation and development of public policy. Program members will participate in high-intensity coursework covering domestic and international policy, economics, statistics and leadership. The program offers a network of peers, faculty and employers who will provide lasting support and guidance as participants pursue graduate school and public service careers.

The program offers a summer stipend as well as fully funded course materials and on-campus housing.

“I am excited to participate in a quantitative-heavy public policy program with bright minds from across the country and understand how economic theory can be used to evaluate policy effectiveness,” said Kim. “Through PPIA, I hope to be able to use my improved economic analysis skills to pursue a career geared toward public policy and policy analysis.”

Kim, from Acworth, Georgia, is an economics major with minors in data science and Latin American and Caribbean studies. He hopes that PPIA will allow him to begin considering opportunities to attend graduate school for economics.

“W&L has contributed to my path toward PPIA by providing an enriching liberal arts education that helped me learn not only the economic theory, but also the real-world perspectives and implications behind various U.S. policies,” said Kim. “Through W&L, I have been able to take interdisciplinary approaches toward analyzing public policy.”

“Lucas took a course I led on The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Future of Work,” said Art Goldsmith, Jackson T. Stephens Professor of Economics.  “He enjoyed bringing insight from economics, psychology and sociology to the task of understanding the opportunities and workplace challenges associated with contemporary technological innovations.  Along the way, he indicated a desire to study public policy. The PPIA program at Princeton University is a stellar place to do this. He will have terrific peers and faculty to learn from, and given his interests and varied talents, he will add to the rich tapestry of the program.”

Kim is a co-chair for the Library Student Advisory Board and a volunteer for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) as an after-school tutor. He is also a member of the Connolly Entrepreneurship Society through which he is creating a video game.
